Just five months after Monica Lewis left her job as a spokeswoman for Mayor Brandon Scott and took a similar position for City Council President Nick Mosby, she is leaving Baltimore government altogether:

Lewis has accepted a position with Howard University as assistant vice president of strategic communications, she told The Brew, confirming that today is her last day on the job.

Her departure represents the latest example of high turnover at City Hall, particularly in communications positions.

Lewis, previously deputy director of communications for Philadelphia city schools, became Scott’s director of communications in July 2022, succeeding Cal Harris.

But Lewis was out after half a year.

Scott replaced her in mid February with New Orleans native Cirilo Manego.

Even more short-lived, Manego’s tenure lasted under three months.

Scott turned to a former campaign staffer to take the communications director job, Bryan Doherty.

Unlike others who came and went as spokespeople for Scott, Lewis stayed in city government, moving over to work with Mosby for a time.

Her new position brings her back to her alma mater, Howard University.

In comments to the AFRO last year, she spoke about her affection for the school.

“I am probably the loudest cheerleader for HBCUs you’ll ever meet,” Lewis said, noting that her daughter currently attends Howard.

“I don’t think I would be where I am or who I am without my Howard experience – it’s like home.”
