Protesters are expected to gather today in Baltimore, as in hundreds of cities across the country, to oppose President Trump’s plans to cut education funding, rollback workers’ rights and carry out mass deportations.
The “Stop the Billionaire Takeover” event, planned by a group of more than 50 organizations, including labor unions, is being held on May 1 – May Day, or International Workers’ Day – a traditional day of protest.
Timed to coincide with the evening rush hour, seven marches are planned to converge on McKeldin Plaza, at Pratt and Light streets, starting at 4 p.m.
Kicking off at about the same time will be six feeder rallies, including a “March for Palestine” and a “March for Migrant Justice,” starting from Penn Station, Rash Field, City Hall and elsewhere.
Each will march to McKeldin Plaza, where the main rally is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Similar protests in Chicago, Los Angeles, Seattle, Washington D.C. and elsewhere in the U.S. have already drawn tens of thousands.
The 50501 movement, which promoted the this year’s earlier Hands Off rallies, helped organize this May Day protest, along with labor unions and grassroots organizations.
In Baltimore a Hands Off rally at War Memorial Plaza on April 5 drew more than a thousand people.
